The Star Wars saga will continue in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a videogame developed by LucasArts, which casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Paired with the powerful Havok Physics™ system, these new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of anything in the environment so that everything reacts exactly like it should - wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, plants on the planet Felucia bend like plants on the planet Felucia would, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioral-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behavior on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

Game Features:
  • During the period between Episodes III and IV, players hunt Jedi in the role of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice.
  • Unleash and upgrade the Secret Apprentice's four core Force powers - Force push, grip, repulse and lightning - throughout the course of the game, and combine them for ultra-destructive, never-before-seen combos.
  • Examples of unleashing the Force in ways never thought possible:
    • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force push enemies into walls - he'll Force push enemies through walls.
    • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force grip foes to throw them aside - he'll Force grip them in midair, zap them with lightning, then drop them to the ground to explode like a bomb.
  • In addition to new adversaries created just for the game, such as fugitive Jedi and Force-sensitive Felucians, players will also confront and associate with familiar faces from the Star Wars films, including Darth Vader.
  • Visit locations such as Episode III's Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk and the floral Felucia, the junk planet Raxus Prime, plus an Imperial TIE fighter construction facility.
  • The Force Unleashed is LucasArts' first internally developed title for next-generation consoles, and it represents the first in-game collaboration of talents and technology between LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic, two companies now finally under one roof at the new Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio district.
  • The Force Unleashed debuts Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and euphoria behavioral simulation from NaturalMotion Ltd.
  • LucasArts is preparing an unprecedented promotional effort around the launch of The Force Unleashed, encompassing a full line of toys and game-based action figures from Hasbro, as well as a full publishing program from Dark Horse, Del Rey and Palace Press.

Meet the Cast

The New Technology of The Force Unleashed
With The Force Unleashed, LucasArts not only introduces a new chapter in the Star Wars saga, but also two completely new and innovative technologies -- Digital Molecular Matter by Pixelux Entertainment and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. These groundbreaking technologies combine with Havoc physics to create true next-gen gameplay and the Force like it's never been seen or experienced before.

1 out of 5 stars Thought it Would be Good   December 29, 2008

I've got to stop ordering games before reading lots of reviews on them. This is a great example. I pre-ordered this game thinking it would be the best Star Wars game. I was wrong.
Pros:
-Nice graphics
-Cool force powers
-The Apprentice has some nice costumes
Cons:
-WAY to short (about 5 hours long)
-WAY to easy
-Overhyped
-You'll never remember the combos
-They offer you force powers that you don't need
-No reason to replay
-DLC
The reason I put DLC as a con is that several weeks after the game launched, LucasArts released DLC. I wouldn't have a problem with this if it was free, but it was. They could of added the content to the final game, but no, they wanted to make more money. I absolutley hate when developers make games then release DLC that could've been put in the final game. They released a few character packs, missions, and costumes, charging up to $15. Another thing I absolutley hated was the part where you bring down the Star Destroyer. In the trailer from E3 or whenever, they showed it as you being able to bring it down in seconds. That would've been really cool. But in the final game you have to bring it down literally inch by inch. And not just that, enemy ships come down every few minutes so you have to stop, destroy them, start bringing it down again, destroy the ships again. It could take up to an hour and was just terrible. I wound up selling it to buy an acually good game like Resistance 2. So do yourself a favor and just avoid this game.

5 out of 5 stars Force Unleashed is it!   December 27, 2008

I got this game as a gift from my wife. And WOW! It's the best action game I've ever played! I was addicted to the game from the first push of the button as Vader cleaning house on Kashyyk! It took me about 10 hours to complete the easy level and am excited to begin taking on the next difficulty level, esp since I am more familiar with the buttons and abilities I have. For the hardcore gamer, the first round is obviously just to get acquainted with the game-play, control configurations, and characteristics. The play is outstanding! Anyone who likes the shoot'em up games must have this in their library of games. The force abilities are so FUN to do! This game is design with the player in mind! I AM A JEDI! You will know what I'm talking about once you place your hands on the controls! Mwaahahahah! I just had to remember to turn off my PS3 when my wife headed off to bed! Props to Lucasarts on this great achievement--and all this on blueray baby! It is the best and most fun 1st person game I've played! 3 cheers for Unleashed!

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but too much repetitive frustration.   December 10, 2008
 2 out of 2 found this review helpful

I know there are a lot of gamers out there who really get into the whole puzzle and menial task aspect of the hobby, but I am not one of them. I like to actually play my games. I dislike having to go through the frustration of figuring out how to get from one place to another, or how to unlock things to allow the story to progress. A little bit of that can be fun, but in the case of this game it makes it almost too annoying to continue playing.

And this why: many times when you die, you get set back so far in the play that you sometimes even have to sit through the same mini cut scenes every time you move to the set off points. What's worse, you often have to re-kill several of the larger enemies. Eventually this sort of thing brought me to the point of deciding the game was no longer fun. There are only so many times that I will want to repeat the same tasks before realizing I have far better things to do with my so called life. Just wait until you get to the Death Star level - this is where if ever you should die, (which likely you will) after having sat through Juno telling you what to do, defeating two AT STs, two purge troopers, several peons, and Imperial Royal Guards - after having played around on the gravity beams - you will have to repeat this again and again any time you die in the frustration of trying to figure out just where you're supposed to be going.

I'm sorry but being set so far back really makes you realize what a waste of time it is to be playing video games in the first place.

So what had started off as great fun and classic beat 'em up gameplay quickly degenerates into frustrating repetition and the growing realization that you should be finding far more important things to do with your precious time.

Too bad though. This would have been a fun game if only it had more action and less repetition and fewer annoying "puzzles" that must be repeated almost after every time you die. Moral of the story: don't ever, ever, ever die in this game unless you enjoy having a sort of Groundhog Day effect upon your life as you sit idly in front of a TV wasting away.

2 out of 5 stars If only the apprentice had learned basic fighting skills...   December 10, 2008
 1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed had the potential for a great story, great game play, and an all-around great entry in the abysmal field of Star Wars video games. Sadly, it fails to live up to its potential.

The story is mildly entertaining, but extremely predictable. The controls and gameplay are frustrating and difficult, often times working against you. The graphics and sound are good, but nothing spectacular.

* Gameplay
The first few hours are fun as you hack and slash your way through storm troopers. After the novelty of electrocution and throwing wears off, the game just becomes a repetitive exercise in button mashing.

The AI cheats on a regular basis and the rules of combat are asymmetric. Enemies can block your most powerful attacks while you are unable to block mindless storm troopers. Your force powers, while entertaining, cannot be used on many of the enemies. Major bosses can't be thrown; some are immune to lightening; nearly all of them can block your light saber indefinitely.

Most of the boss and mini-boss battles end with a special button-sequence you have to enter with the right timing. It's cheesy, pointless, and detracts from enjoying the well-done cinematic death.

The Apprentice also has a number of fighting problems. He steps forward when he slashes and will step right off a cliff to his death. He takes 4-9 seconds to get back up and is vulnerable to attack during. The same cannot be said for the enemies.

Saves are via checkpoint system. The checkpoints are not evenly spaced and some major battles have multiple waves of enemies without saves.

* Controls
The biggest problem is with the targeting system. If you've played Assassin's Creed, imagine that system with a sloppy camera and having dozens of inanimate targets in a room. More often than not, the targeting system will select a rock or barrel causing your camera and force powers to be misdirected.

You'll electrocute, push, or slash inanimate objects when you mean to attack the bad buy. This is especially a problem with bosses and later levels when they are able to kill you with just a few hits.

Fighting is all about combos. Combos may be difficult for some to master; this doesn't matter since most combos can be blocked by enemies. Worse yet, enemies can hit you while executing a combo and interrupt the sequence. You cannot do the same to enemies.

* The Force
Force powers are entertaining, but nothing special. You throw stuff, push stuff, and electrocute things. Many things are immune to your powers, including the later bosses.

Of particular note is one sequence late in the game where the Apprentice demonstrates power far beyond Darth Vader or the Emperor. This sequence is slow, boring, and pointless. It took upwards of 30 minutes to complete and the on-screen instructions you are supposed to follow is actually wrong at times. It also raises another question: why is Starkiller the "Apprentice" if he is this powerful? Shouldn't he be the Master?

* Summary
Download the demo. Play it, throw a few storm troopers out a window. Get your fill of being a Jedi and move on. If you can get the game used at a substantial discount, it may be worth it. Otherwise, save your time and money and get something else.
