Johnston Biotek Inc. is no exeption, but not all companie's secrets are as dark and destructive as this one. Half Shooter, half Role-playing [RPG} with some frustations December 15, 2008
This is an absorbing game and quite unique; am glad I happened on it.
An European import, it requires much patience and perserverence, and
gives hours and hours of entertainment.
Graphics are so-so but acceptable, game-play is sometimes intense,
sometimes frustrating; quick-save-load buttons are included and need to
be used often.
The game is difficult, especially the Cyber Wars which I found next
to impossible.
All in all though, highly recommended.
A CYBERPUNK cRPG THAT FIREWALLED ITS OWN FUTURE July 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There are not enough futuristic cRPGs - and the good ones are quite rare. So I was more than willing to cut NEURO HUNTER some slack. Well, it needed it.
I picked this for a song, since this is the fate of games ruined by over the top DRM schemes: sadly, NEURO HUNTER harbors StarFORCE. I had vowed never to buy another DRM-damaged game. However, they keep stuffing the sales bins at really tempting prices so I knew I had to come up with a solution. Luckily, I have cannibalized a couple of older PCs and rigged an unconnected system that I keep in the basement: this I can afford to put at risk. For some time now I run all the DRM bargains on it. After the $5million class-action suit against UBISOFT/StarFORCE and the BIOSHOCK/MASS EFFECT fiascoes, it is bound to see some action.
The game is an FPS cRPG with character development and item equipping. In a cyberpunk dystopia you fill the boots of, well, Neuro Hunter, a net runner that got screwed by his shady employer (Johnson Biotech) and now runs for his life - and all life for that matter. The graphics are certainly dated but even in their day they were far from impressive - and, what is worse, character navigation made me a bit...nauseous. Apart from the usual cRPG features (inventory, bartering, NPC dialogs and the like), the game contains a number of interesting original ideas (from hacking mini-games to virtual strategy battles) but they fail to save the day.
As someone who is a great fan of WILLIAM GIBSON's cyberpunk noir Sprawl Trilogy (not to mention using the NeuroSplicer handle!) it pains me not to be able to recommend NEURO HUNTER. Nevertheless, I cannot honestly rate it higher than 3 stars.
Not too bad of a sci-fi April 12, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
You're a futuristic computer hacker for a company who behind the scenes tries to use you then tosses you away. Now your only real allies are people you have to betray, all the while staying alive as you fight creatures from experiments gone awry. You can assemble weapons and armor as you go from hacking info from the computers to help yourself, but be careful, you never know who to trust...
